W3-3/3 The Balancing Act of Cyber Security (7/11)
On Wednesday I took some quick mandatory courses. One of those courses
that I took was Cyber Security Awareness. This was a good reminder to me on why
cyber security is so important in today’s world. Cyber breaches are still a
common threat of today, any establishment or person could become a target of a
malicious actor. Even with the greatest of resources and defenses an
environment can still be compromised. There is a constant and ever-changing
meta within cyber security. As cyber security advances so does hacking to
keep up with it. The most capable hackers attack the most vulnerable
weaknesses: human error/trust (social engineering) and unforeseen weaknesses (zero-day
attacks). I think my favorite thing that I have noticed about cyber security is
that it is so strategic.
Cyber security is a balancing act in more than one way. Generally, when
configuring and setting up a network greater vantage leads to greater
redundancy and thus lesser efficiency. On the software side of things, it is
very similar, a heavy defense usually leads to a greater number of false
positives and a lower number of false negatives, yet this causes lower efficiency
due to the sheer number of false positives. Incidence Protocol within various
environments can also sacrifice time for a stronger defense. This balancing act
is all about making what works best within that environment and what has at
least the needed security and the best security to go along with the best
efficiency possible within cyber security space. Armor must protect the knight,
but armor must also allow the knight to move. A strong defense does no good if
it halts the productivity of the operation and efficiency does no good if it is
helpless against malicious actors. This is what interests me in cyber security.
This is what excites me about the field. I really want to explore this
balancing act further and understand its finer details better.
